General Business
Bachelor
of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a concentration
in General Business
The
business program has three goals for its graduates; to become excellent
business professionals, to develop strong independent and collaborative
learning skills and to become socially responsible business scholars
and practitioners.
We seek students who are motivated, self-disciplined and eager to
participate in an innovative learning environment. Our graduates
will complement the business core with a specialization in finance
or general business. They will be competent in analyzing financial/organizational
problems and formulating business solutions within an integrated
decision making framework that optimizes the welfare of society
even as it promotes individual self-interest.
The program focuses on developing graduates with learning skills
appropriate for business professionals and leaders. It prepares
them to participate in collaborative learning environments using
state of the art technology to access, prepare and communicate information.
It enables them to work with diverse communities in creative ways
to overcome limitations posed by time or location. Our graduates
will possess technical skills for conducting, interpreting and communicating
quantitative and qualitative analysis for business decision making.
They will demonstrate strong creative and critical thinking skills
as well as the ability to approach problems from a variety of perspectives.
They will be culturally competent and ethically conscious business
practitioners and leaders, with the skills and knowledge to meet
the demands of a diverse global economy.
The program of study begins with a foundation in organizational
theory, finance, marketing, and operations management. The finance
concentration provides the analytical core with a focus on financial
markets, portfolio optimization, and financial regulation. Business
courses will create opportunities for discussion of the workplace
as well as reflection on economic, social and cultural issues to
provide a framework for personal and professional growth. The administrative
policy course with a required capstone project completes the requirements.
The program is meant for those who wish to build an expertise in
finance or in organizational leadership. It equips students for
graduate study in any field related to business management. The
concentration also prepares graduates for careers in banking, financial
consulting, investment, insurance, government, regulatory agencies
or leadership roles in private or public institutions.
Program
Requirements
This degree completion program is designed for students who have
completed at least 60 semester hours of transferable college credit
with a GPA of 2.0 or better, or individuals who have completed an
associate degree at the community college level. Prior transcripts
are evaluated to determine academic status in relation to satisfying
degree program requirements, including both general education courses
equivalent to Indiana University East core curriculum and all prerequisites
necessary for upper division, junior and senior-level work in the
business program.
Between 44 -49 credits are required to complete the program. The
number of courses needed to complete the degree will depend primarily
on how many earlier credits transfer. Students who have already
completed appropriate general education and distribution requirements
for the BSBA program may complete all the course work online. The
duration of the program will vary depending upon whether an individual
can take a full-time or part-time load successfully each semester.
Fulltime students may complete the program in 4 semesters (including
a summer term) if they commit to a load of 12 -13 credits each for
3 semesters and between 7 -11 credits in one summer term. Please
work with an advisor to draw up a completion schedule that best
matches individual learning needs and time constraints.
Students are encouraged to complete any outstanding general education
courses and lower division prerequisites prior to enrolling in the
program. Some of the prerequisite general education and distribution
requirement courses may also be offered online
at IU East , through other IU
